Yesterday morning, my family and I agreed to intentionally carry out good acts of service to someone – acquaintance or stranger alike. It was to be done along our way for the whole day and each one of us was to report back in our family meeting what they did. So we went out – young and old alike – looking for what good to do for someone… and a number of things were truly done.

In principle, we can agree or disagree, but the one truth that’s hard to evade is that everyone is on earth for the benefit of someone else. That other person is called “OTHERS”. Whatever you do may (and should) reward you, but all the same it benefits others. Meaningful life and/or work SHOULD benefit OTHERS. Those OTHERS should be the primary motivation of your sweat.

Your dreams must (or will) end with someone else benefiting even when you feel fulfilled about their achievement. For example:

  1. As you achieve the dream of building rental houses to get money out of them, many others will be finding shelter. Why not be intentional on bettering their welfare as their landlord? Do it for your sake. Your reward still remains.
  2. As you achieve the dream of writing books for money, someone will.actually be getting that piece of advice they needed to rescue their family. Why not be deliberate on ensuring real excellence in your writing to give more than information? Do it for their sake. Your reward still remains.
  3. As you achieve your dream of building the tallest building in the city of Kampala or Nairobi or Jos, hundreds will be finding enough business space to achieve their aspirations too, affecting thousands of families in the process. Why not be intentional on enauring it’s a good quality building that won’t collapse and kill thousands? Do it for their sake. Your reward still remains.
  4. As you achieve your dream of being a great farmer, many others are finding food. Why not be deliberate about ensuring you supply very healthy, safe and well looked after products? Do it for their sake. Your reward still remains.

Fulfilling YOUR purpose is for THEIR benefit because a purpose that’s selfish is a fake concoction. After all, someone out there is also fulfilling their purpose for your benefit.

So rest assured that as you give out, someone else also will be working hard to ensure you receive – whether they’re intentional about it or not, whether they known it or not.

That’s how life happens. Why not make it deliberate then? Do so this week. Start today. Be deliberate about helping others.

Live. Love. Lead.
