Have you ever felt like like bear being woken up from its hibernation in the morning? When it clocked 5am yesterday, I felt a need to sleep for “a little longer”. Then all of a sudden I remembered I had an executive coaching session for one of the senior executives in town at 7:30am. Immediately, my heart warmed up, my body miraculously became stronger, and out of bed I leaped like a ninja warrior!
Coaching leaders, to me, has become a great passion, a deeply satisfying people-empowering engagement, and a meaningful time I invest in scaling up influencers. It is one of the components at the core of my purpose: developing leaders — my life’s strongest WHY. And whenever anything is connected to that WHY, my enthusiasm for it exponentially manifests.
So I jumped out of bed like a kangaroo, took a glass of water, had a moment of spiritual alignment, empowered my mind by reading some leadership and management articles from Harvard Business Review, broke a sweat for physical fitness, had light chats with my family as I prepared to leave, and by 7:10am I was already in my office, ready for the coaching session at 7:30am.
A video clip that someone sent me a day before yesterday!
The coaching session went very well, followed by:
- another coaching session for a bank manager at 10am,
- a 40-minute mutual empowerment discussion with one of my staff at 11:40pm,
- another coaching session for a procurement officer in a government authority at 12:40pm,
- a meeting with some service provider (for the leadership assemblies we often hold) at 3:30pm,
- a Training Plan meeting with a Professor from Makerere University at 4:30pm,
- a brief authorship chat with one of the graduates of our Public Speaking course at 5pm,
- a 3-hour out-of-home evening date with my wife (longest session of the day!) at 6pm,
- …and then went home with my wife to surprising acts of service from our two dear children – Petra and Prosper – which included a prepared feet bath, etc.
But all this started with connecting my mind to my strong WHY which then enabled me to easily leave that bed early enough to attend to the following Fs by the day’s end: Faith, Firm, Family, Fitness (physical and mental), Finance, Friends, and Fun. This is what some people call work-life balance, something I prefer to call work-life INTEGRATION.
“Discover the deep reason for doing what you want to do and you’ll drastically accumulate enough momentum for your pursuits. You will find enough fuel for the journeys. You will gather ample energy for the ride.” – Samuel A. Bakutana
Without a clear purpose in life, passion will be misplaced, productivity will be hindered, and abuse will ultimately be inevitable. Set goals that make you not just WANT TO jump out of bed. Have those that actually make you JUMP OUT.
Happy day.
