Today I came across a powerful message that used an analogy of porcupines one cold winter. Instead of dying in isolation, they chose to put up with each other’s piercing quills so as to be warm and survive death.
The article then urged readers to learn to “live with the imperfections of others and yet admire [their] good qualities.”
After appreciating the great lesson, something came to my mind: Why not deal with the quills?
Consider these 10 brief thoughts:
- It’s okay to remind each other to put up with the quills, the thorns, the irritations. This is correct, noble and divinely expected.
- That said, what if each one of us also decided to either reduce or eliminate their own sharp quills (regardless of the self-defence the quills offer against predators)?
- Wouldn’t we give each other a relatively easier work of trying to peacefully live with (I won’t say “tolerate”) one another?
- Reminder: You were created to be celebrated , not endured.
- People around you keep tolerating and enduring you when you choose to keep doing well that which you are not supposed to even be doing at all.
- This year, try to intentionally reduce on the quills in your life — those bad habits, irritating words, uncivilized behaviours — and be a better person in your social circles.
- Without a doubt, it’s a painful process (like the one an eagle goes through to renew its youth) but it’s better than the pain of being ignored, avoided and seen as a distraction by those around you.
- What are your personal quills? What are you going to do about them?
- Like my friend and fellow Coach Lawrence wrote today, you can choose to make this your ” Decade of Personal Revolution ” in the sense of Personal growth and self-betterment.
- As Jim Rohn taught us, “Don’t wish THINGS were easier; wish YOU were better.”
Live. Love. Lead.
